A holodeck is a perfectly simulated virtual environment that has no physical or haptic limitations, and that could therefore let us explore and understand any spatial setting imaginable. Right now, though, it is technologically impossible to produce a perfectly simulated environment that users can experience with all their senses. However, today’s visual computing technologies do allow us to build and visit virtual environments. Head-mounted displays let users view and move through a virtual reality – but they can’t touch anything in there yet.
